General Petition
Department of Liberal Studies General Petition
The General Online Petition may be used by Liberal Studies Majors at 色中色 for specific requests that require special departmental approval and processing. Once submitted and reviewed, the student will hear back from a Liberal Studies Advisor by email with the final decision.
The Petition may be used for several reasons, listed below:
Students must complete and/or be enrolled in all pre-requisites in a given Area prior to enrollment for the Capstone (Area I - Area V). If a student wishes to enroll into an L/ST capstone (400, 404, or 471) and pre-requisite from the same Area during the same semester or out of order, they will need to request special permission from the Department to do so. [Example: Student has ENGL 309 (Area I, Group 4) and L/ST 400 (Area I, Group 7) remaining and wants to enroll into both courses during same term.]
Exceptions:
- MTED 402 - Need to enroll into MTED 402 and an MTED pre-req from Area II in the same term? Contact the Math Department through Dr. Benken at Babette.Benken@csulb.edu.
- SCED 401 - Need to enroll into SCED 401 and a science pre-req from Area III at the same time? Complete the the petition below and email the petition plus additional documentation to the Science Education Department at Scied@csulb.edu.

- Took the Correct Courses and Can't Enroll? If a student has completed/is completing all pre-requisites from the same Area and cannot enroll for a L/ST Capstone due to error, email CED-LibSt@csulb.edu. A Liberal Studies Advisor will review the record and assist with registration.
If a student believes they have met a specific requirement with an alternative course that was not pre-approved in equivalency, they can submit a request for a course review. Depending on the course in review, the Department of Liberal Studies will either review it or another department will do so. A course description is required.
Exceptions:
- MTED Course Equivalencies: Contact the Math Department through Dr. Benken at Babette.Benken@csulb.edu.
- Science Course Equivalencies: Complete the Science Education Concurrent Enrollment form and email to Scied@csulb.edu.
- Area VI Course Equivalencies (with the exception of Critical Thinking) should submit a "Course Equivalency Review" with Teacher Credentialing, found through the Forms and Documents Credential Website.
- For a list of pre-approved course equivalencies at the Community College, refer to the Transfer Credit Guide.
Students in the Liberal Studies Program should finalize their program pathway by or at the start of Senior Year or Standing, as per following University Timely Graduation Policy. If a student fails to submit their ITEP Credential Program Application and needs additional time to submit, the student may request support from the Department of Liberal Studies for an extension to apply. Typically extensions that are approved allow one additional semester to apply and be admitted accordingly.
Students in the Liberal Studies Program should finalize their program pathway by or at the start of Senior Year or Standing, as per following University Timely Graduation Policy. If a student switches successfully to an ITEP pathway but wants to switch back to the BA pathway for graduation, the student may submit a petition requesting to do so.
Exception: Students cannot be switched automatically from the BA Pathway to ITEP. To be part of the ITEP pathway for graduation, students must apply to a Teaching Credential Program and be admitted successfully. For more information, refer to the Liberal Studies Program Overview Website.
