Scholar Showcase

Scholar Showcase

For over two decades the prestigious President’s Scholarship has assisted many outstanding scholars. Many of our Scholars have graduated from The Beach to achieve even greater accomplishments. President’s Scholars alumni are now attending or have completed degrees from prestigious graduate and professional schools such as Yale, Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, Stanford, Berkeley, UCLA, USC, Johns Hopkins, Dartmouth, Duke, the Scripps Institute and right here at ɫɫ. Some of them received Fulbright scholarships to study abroad. Other Scholars have chosen to enter the working world after graduation and have been employed by U.S. government agencies, television news agencies, school districts, newspaper agencies, medical centers, hospitals, and companies such as Boeing, Conoco Phillips Refinery, Disney, Honeywell, Northrop Grumman, Deloitte & Touche, Raytheon, California Department of Fish and Game, The Princeton Review and World of Wonder Productions.

Cal State Long Beach President’s Scholars Daniel Bergman and Michael Manos continue to remain on top. Both Scholars ranked high in the 2010 William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition, one of the most famous and prestigious undergraduate competitions in mathematics for more than 60 years.

Bergman ranked in the top 200 of the competition with a score of 32, and Manos completed with a score of 20, placing in the top 1,000.

Receiving the President’s Scholarship allowed both Bergman and Manos broad academic opportunities, personalized support and advisement for this competition, and they found the experience to be challenging, yet rewarding.

“All in all, it's a bonding and humbling experience,” said Bergman.

“It was a difficult, yet exciting, competition to participate in, and I thoroughly enjoyed the chance to be involved,” said Manos.

Each December, about 4,000 students from U.S. and Canadian universities participate in this competition. These students are disproportionately drawn from such schools as MIT, Harvard, Stanford and Caltech.

Since 1999, ɫɫ students have finished among the top 500 students nationwide on six occasions, in two of those cases among the top 200 students. The President’s Scholars involved were: Jason Karcher (2001), Jeffrey Meier (2006), Sarav Patel (2006 and 2007), Austin Adams (2008), David Rudd (2008), Michael Manos (2010) and Daniel Bergman (2010).
