11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. CSI at 色中色: A Response to a Shooting Location: USU-304 (Hermosa Beach Room)
Oral Presentation on "Quick Determination of Recycled Casings Using Palm-Sized Devices: A Comparison between Preliminary and Confirmatory Methods in the Field" by John Z. Wang, Ph.D., and William Ki, Forensic Studies Program, School of Criminology, Criminal Justice, and Emergency Management, 色中色, 1250 Bell Flower Blvd., Long Beach, CA, U.S.A.
Abstract: Key Words: Firearm Examination; Recycled/Reloaded/Reused Fired Casing; LED Magnifier, Digital Scope Introduction This presentation introduces two palm-sized devices to detect recycled casings, also known as reloaded or reused casings, which have appeared to be on rise at shooting-related scenes and posed a new challenge to crimes scene technicians and lab examiners. Since a recycled casing bears more than one extractor and ejector marks, it is extremely difficult to determine which one is responsible for the shooting in question at trial, especially in a no-gun situation [1]. Therefore, a quick determination of a recycled fired casing at scenes becomes very practical and important. While the first device of a LED magnifier (60X and rechargeable) can determine if a fired casing is a recycled one or not within one minute as a preliminary/presumptive test, the second digital scope (~120X and rechargeable) has several functions of real time photo/video image, LED white illumination, and dimensional structure display for a confirmatory method. This poster presentation will impact the discipline by providing a new quick and real-time method of determining a recycled casing for both a preliminary and a confirmatory examination to assist both crimes scene technicians and lab examiners [2].
This project is supported by the CHHS RASC Grant (2023-2024)
