Moot Court wins national championship

teammates Aleece Hanson, a third-year political science major, and Barry Klein, a recent political science graduate, won the national championship for the Written Respondent Brief. This is the third time ɫ��ɫ has won this national title. 

All four ɫ��ɫ moot court teams at nationals advanced to the elimination rounds. 

Professor awarded book prize

 

Spanish Professor Bonnie Gasior was recently awarded the Vern Williamsen Comedia Book Prize for her edited volume “Making Sense of the Senses: Current Approaches in Spanish Comedia Criticism.” The prize was awarded by the Association for Hispanic Classical Theater (AHCT). 

The Williamsen prize is awarded once every three years to a monograph or edited volume published since the prize was last awarded. The prize reflects a consensus opinion of the work’s merit and importance for the AHCT’s area of study.

 

Professor awarded Counselor Educator of the Year

 

Assistant Professor Caroline Lopez-Perry was recently named Counselor Educator of the Year by the California Association of School Counselors (CASC).

"I am honored to have been recognized by the California Association of School Counselors as the Counselor Educator of the Year,” she said. “Educational equity has always been at the center of my instruction, research, and service so I am grateful for an award that highlights the body of work I hope to consistently display in my career.” 

 

Students win honors in design competition

ɫ��ɫ students received three of the top 10 awards in the Steelcase, Inc. Competition. In this invitation-only design competition for students throughout the United States, ɫ��ɫ students competed against more than 900 entries and 60 nationwide programs.  

The Beach was also the only school to land two of the five semifinalist spots.

Alumnus nominated for Oscar

ɫ��ɫ alumnus Travon Free ’07 was recently “Two Distant Strangers.” Free, who also worked as a writer on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” wrote and directed the short film. 

In the film, a cartoonist repeatedly attempts to get home to his dog but is thwarted by a recurring deadly encounter that forces him to live the same terrible day over and over.

Congrats to our Employee of the Month

 

Daniel Carlos, an Internship and Job Development Specialist in ɫ��ɫ’s Career Development Center, was named employee of the month in January 2021. 

He was recognized by his colleagues as being an essential part of the major Career Development Center events on campus during the fall 2021 semester. 

 

Marine biology student earns Aquarium of the Pacific scholarship

Marine biology student Danielle Sandoval, who is also minoring in chemistry, was .

The scholarship is open to students who have demonstrated a commitment to studies related to careers in the aquarium field.

Graduates earn prestigious national research fellowships

 

Chemical engineering graduates Addis Fuhr ‘13 and Aaron Joffe ‘13 recently landed prestigious fellowships.  Fuhr is studying novel materials at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, home to one of the world’s fastest supercomputers. Joffe is working on tasks related to COVID-19 at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases within the National Institutes of Health.

Student writes pediatric cancer book

First-year student Giovanna Quevedo recently published “A Kid’s Guide to Radiation Therapy,”. 

Quevado, who is pursuing a pre-health undergraduate degree, was inspired to create the book after her mother was diagnosed with cancer and Quevado found that educational materials for patients are usually directed towards adults. 

Society of Physics Students recognized as Distinguished Chapter

The ɫ��ɫ Society of Physics Students was recognized as a 2019-2020 Distinguished Chapter of the (SPS).

Chapters are recognized after a careful review of the information, photos and supporting material present in the annual SPS Chapter Reports.
