Doing twice the good

During this year's move-out, students from Beachside, Hillside and Cerritos housing donated more than 7,500 pounds of clothing and other household items to the Salvation Army. That meant less waste going to the landfill and, instead, items went to people who could use them. According to Cal State Long Beach’s Sustainability team, the upward trajectory of waste diversion through the years reflects an increased awareness of sustainability (see infographic below).

 

Professor recognized for her work

 

Shira Tarrant, Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies professor, has been selected as a fellow with the University of California National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement (2019-20). She will be working on a project titled “Sex on Campus: A Teaching Toolkit to Promote Free Speech and Data-Driven Dialogue.” Topics include Title IX, pornography, social media, sexting, hookups, consent and #MeToo. Two ɫ��ɫ students will be working as her research assistants.

And the nominee is…

Dana Fujikuni a 49er former soccer player and 2018 alumna, was selected by Cal State Long Beach as its nominee for the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year award.

A standout as a midfielder, Fujikuni was selected as honorable mention all-Big West conference, twice (2016, 2017). According to the NCCA, “the program honors the academic achievements, athletics excellence, community service and leadership of outstanding female college athletes.”

Graduate student receives scholarship from Nurses Association

The American Psychiatric Nurses Association has announced that graduate student Jemma-Joy Coster is among “the 30 accomplished nursing students selected to receive the 2019 Board of Directors Student Scholarship.” Scholarship winners receive registration, travel and lodging to attend the APNA 33rd Annual Conference to be held October 2-5 in New Orleans, as well as a one-year complimentary APNA membership.

According to the APNA, “the student scholarship program cultivates aspiring nurses and develops the next generation of leaders dedicated to psychiatric-mental health nursing.”

Dr. Steimetz honored for his community work

Dr. Seiji Steimetz, professor and chair of the university’s economics department, was honored for his community work in shaping economic policy and development planning for the city of Long Beach at the 10th Annual Go Long Beach Awards held June 7.

A 'Best Value'

Cal State Long Beach was rated No. 12 on the list of “Top 25 Best Value MPA Programs for 2019” by ValueColleges, an organization that helps prospective students make college decisions.  According to ValueColleges, “CSU Long Beach stands out for its focus on quality online education. The degree program recognizes the challenges of self-study and helps students accomplish their goals by assigning a special support coordinator to make the process of completing the paperwork easy for students.”

A Gerontology professor’s class receives national attention for using sitcom

 

Media outlets across the nation have featured a ɫ��ɫ class that gleans lessons from the hit NBC sitcom, “The Golden Girls,” which ran from 1985-92.

“Women and Aging: Lessons from the Golden Girls,” the brainchild of Maria Claver, a gerontology professor who created the Cal State Long Beach class with colleague Long Wang in spring 2018, thinks nostalgia is one reason why “The Golden Girls” continues to generate viewer interest. Claver, however, uses the class to focus on topics that are “sometimes uncomfortable or difficult to discuss” without the aid of the show’s humor. The weekly class touches on subjects like menopause, addiction, sexuality, dementia and caregiving. Typically, Claver and Wang screen an episode and discuss the topic.

Long Beach State’s 2019 NCCA men’s volleyball champions

In the 2018-19 Learfield IMG Directors' Cup, Long Beach State finished as the fourth-highest scoring non-football school and finished with 203 total points in the 2018-19 Learfield IMG Director’s Cup after an extremely successful spring.
 
Led by the 2019 NCAA National Champion men's volleyball team, Long Beach State trailed only Hawai'i among Big West programs, and was the highest-scoring CSU program.

Helping define the future

Tony Malagrino, associate vice president of Physical Planning & Facilities Management, has been named to a blue-ribbon panel of higher education experts by Planon Corporation, a leading provider of integrated software solutions designed to enhance facility management process. The panel consists of those who are helping define the technology requirements of the campus and define its goals for the future.
