Travel Funds for Students

The Graduate Travel Fellowship provides up to $1,000 to post-baccalaureate students enrolled in a É«ÖÐÉ« master's, doctoral, credential, or graduate certificate program who are presenting at an academic conference. Support is available for all students (including international, and AB540 students).

  • Students who have been selected to present a paper, talk, poster, or performance, in person or remotely, at a scholarly conference or convention are eligible to apply for up to $1000 in university travel support.
  • Students who are attending or volunteering at a scholarly conference or academic meeting, but not presenting a talk, poster, or performance, are eligible to apply for the cost of the conference registration.
  • NOTE: Because funds are limited, the Graduate Travel Fellowship is awarded only once per graduate student per academic year on a first come, first served basis.
  • Fall 2024 applications are now closed (all funds have been exhausted). However, applications for Spring 2025 will be available starting December 2, 2024. For questions or further information, please contact AA-graduatetravel@csulb.edu

Applications must be submitted no less than 3 weeks prior to the proposed date of departure (late applications will not be accepted). If you are traveling to present your own academic research, you can request reimbursement for transportation and conference/registration fees.  If you are attending a conference for your own academic enrichment and not presenting research, you can request reimbursement for conference/registration fees only. The Financial Aid and Scholarships Office collects, organizes, and distributes information on scholarships and administers specific scholarships for the Division of Student Affairs (University Scholarships). It also supports all the Colleges on campus with scholarships. For graduate students, two of the most useful pages maintained by the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office are the How to apply for aid page- Graduate students  and the Scholarship FAQs page

The State University Grant is funded by the State of California to assist students whose ability to attend post-secondary institutions is jeopardized due to financial constraints. Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholars Program
The Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Program is designed to increase diversity among university faculty by supporting the doctoral aspirations of CSU students who have experienced economic and educational disadvantages. Sally Casanova scholars receive a $5000 stipend that allows them to explore and prepare to succeed in PhD/doctoral programs in their chosen field of study. The program is open to current CSU graduate students and upper-division (junior and senior) undergrad students.

Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Program (CDIP)

The California State University (CSU) Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Program (CDIP) provides an opportunity for exceptional students interested in working as scholars and teachers in the CSU to receive comprehensive support during their doctoral studies. The CSU has an ambitious goal of increasing graduation rates for all students while eliminating opportunity and achievement gaps. Fundamental to meeting this goal is supporting efforts to create a qualified and diverse faculty to meet the needs of the most ethnically and economically diverse student body in the nation. Since 1987, CDIP has supported 2,455 fellows pursuing doctoral degrees with mentoring, financial support, and professional development opportunities. Over 50 faculty members at É«ÖÐÉ« were previous CDIP fellows.

É«ÖÐÉ« CDIP Fellows:

  • Receive mentorship from a É«ÖÐÉ« faculty member to (a) support completion of their doctoral studies and (b) develop their potential for employment as a CSU faculty member;
  • Have access to three CDIP grant programs:
    • Mini-Grants: up to $2500 for collaborative activities and research-dissertation activities (e.g., research supplies, small equipment, computer programs, software, books, journal subscriptions)
    • Travel Grants: up to $1,500 in travel funds to participate in professional meetings, conferences, and workshops (mentors are also eligible for $1500 in travel funds!)
    • Dissertation Fellowships: up to $5,000  in funds to support the completion of doctoral studies in the final year of the dissertation
  • Can choose to receive a loan of up to $10,000 per year for three years (max. $30,000), which will be forgiven at 20% per year for each year of fulltime postdoctoral teaching employment in the CSU.
