Summer Camps at The Beach
Summer camp at 色中色 is in full swing once again. Session two of the Academic Enrichment and 49er Camp program began this week bringing in students from kindergarten through 8th grade.
The purpose of the Academic Enrichment Camp is to provide children with a relaxed learning environment where they can participate in activities of all subjects, including math, computers, art, science and language arts. The majority of the instructors are 色中色 students or alumni. Field trips include well-known destinations on campus including the University Art Museum, Carpenter Performing Arts Center, Shark Lab, and Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden.
Rita Hayes, director of Club Sports and Recreation, said that this year about 230 campers participated in session one, and 250 children are participating in session two.
鈥淭he classes have worked on some pretty cool projects, like video editing, stop animation and building arcade games out of boxes,鈥 Hayes said.
Children can also attend the popular 49er Camp, which spans a whole host of physical fitness activities such as daily swim lessons, archery, bowling, soccer, dance and basketball. This year more than 1,000 boys and girls signed up for 49er Camp.
The 49er Camp program celebrated its 50th year in 2014. It grew from 100 original participants in a six-week session, to an average of 900 campers over two four-week sessions.
